2009 will be the fifth in the series of the Canadian Healthcare Safety
Symposia to be webcast live. Organizations are encouraged to participate
in the webcast, thus allowing frontline and other staff to participate
in the important learning that will take place at the Symposium.
Webcasting has grown from nine sites in 2005 to 50 sites in 2009. Many
of these sites organized local "conferences" where people in
their organization signed-up for the webcast, met in a common room, observed
the sessions together, and engaged in discussion during break and meal
times. There are more "Tips for hosting a webcast"
at the bottom of this page.
Webcast Schedule-at-a-Glance
The webcast will run for three days, starting on Thursday, October 22
and concluding on Saturday, October 24. For those sites joining us in
the western provinces, the webcast will be archived shortly after presentations
are completed. These sites will be able to join the live webcast during
the morning break or at lunch and return to view the sessions missed at
the end of the day.

Tips for Hosting the Webcast
What follows is a brief collection of tips that have been gathered over the
past years:
- Designate a "local liaison" who will be responsible for organizing the logistical
needs of the site.
- Be aware that the sessions are scheduled with consideration of the
local time zone (i.e. The lunch break in Winnipeg could be one, two
or even three hours ahead or after your normally scheduled meal times).
- Be sure to test the system you are going to use for the live webcast and test
it more than once.
- Have a contingency plan in case a computer doesn't cooperate or in case of
other unforeseen circumstances.
- Gather several people from your organization to view the webcast together.
Networking and discussion continue to be important themes of the Halifax
Symposia.
- Refresh your viewer at each break to ensure that you don't overfill your browser's
cache.
Add your input by emailing the Webcast Coordinator halifax@buksa.com.
