Accelerating Primary Care Conference 2009

Accelerating Primary Care 2009 is the fourth annual conference hosted by Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta. The event will feature examples of primary care reform. Presenters will discuss the changes they have made, highlighting what worked, what didn’t work and where they are today in their progression. As a result of attending this conference, practitioners will be encouraged and prepared to revolutionize their practices and policies to improve their services and outcomes.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:
Change
- Appreciate the theoretical concepts of managing change so that it benefits both the team and the people served, and develop a plan to implement needed change in their own setting.
- Outline the 9 simple strategies that can transform a practice and how implementing these strategies will assist in ensuring efficient decision‑making, reduce errors and create a positive atmosphere.
- Understand how physicians think and how this affects both clinical decision making and the care the organization provides.
- Articulate how to build sustainability into the change process by describing practical tools, techniques and ideas that will assist in maintaining the benefits of the improvements made.
Service Innovation
- Appreciate the steps needed to transform a practice and articulate how these steps can be incorporated into their own setting.
- Strive for world‑class outcomes and levels of satisfaction for staff and clients.
- Using the information in the CIHI pan-Canadian survey of patients experiences in primary care, determine what changes can be made in their setting to improve patient satisfaction.
Research and Evaluation
- Take away ideas on how to apply research to improve safety and quality of care.
- Analyze how the process of reporting safety incidents and holding clinic‑based discussions that result in system changes can improve safety.
Integration
- Recognize the importance, as well as the challenges and benefits, of integrating new care areas into existing settings.
- Explain the principles of interdisciplinary team formation.
- Assess the role that pharmacy and mental health can play in the primary care setting and how to overcome the challenges they face in the integration process.
- Articulate the principles of the circumferential model of integration and how these principles can be incorporated into their own practice setting.
